CREATING A NARRATIVE - PORTRAITS

Reflection:
I aim to construct a larger than life character
that commands deity entitlement.

Revisiting images from the night in 2015 I pin pointed as when my Ego death began, I rediscovered these two images of a crowd erupting and revolting. They capture the peak of all stage invasions I've bared witness to, there were important people, motivation and passion, everything needed for a successful uprising.

After Jesus’ sham trials and subsequent flogging, and before He was crucified, the Roman soldiers “twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on His head. They put a staff in His right hand and knelt in front of Him and mocked Him. ‘Hail, king of the Jews!’ they said” (Matthew 27:29; John 19:2-5). While a crown of thorns would be exceedingly painful, the crown of thorns was more about mockery than it was about pain. Here was the “King of the Jews” being beaten, spit upon, and insulted by presumably low-level Roman soldiers. The crown of thorns was the finalizing of their mockery, taking a symbol of royalty and majesty, a crown, and turning it into something painful and degrading...
There is further symbolism embodied in the crown of thorns. When Adam and Eve sinned, bringing evil and a curse upon the world, part of the curse upon humanity was “…cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you…” (Genesis 3:17-18). The Roman soldiers unknowingly took an object of the curse and fashioned it into a crown for the one who would deliver us from that curse.

Some parallels:

equilibrium: the hatching of character with apple
disruption: character informing disciples with crown of thorns
realisation
climax: disciples uprising

Essentially, the final outcome should have a layout like this. The middle largest image will be the birthing of the character as this will be the most complex image, it will also have the most direct references to a painting which should not be wasted on a less predominant image. The physicality of the image's construction will mean I need a darkly lit room, most likely a studio so a large quantity of the background could be black - Harry centre stage copying the above pose and the room filled with objects to set the scene and suggest forthcoming events e.g. apples *
The image on the left, again darkly lit with a subtle vignette, could again be made in a studio. As herding enough people to be in the crowd will be difficult to achieve, I could take a Rachel Maclean approach and use Harry again to be the face of every disciple. This would make subtle comment to ideas of oneness and the true meaning of 'God' being the realisation that we are all god. As the images will be far from typical renaissance paintings of religious scenes, this should all point to the absurdities of Western religion which was my aim in the prior part of this project.
The image on the right I will perhaps need some body doubles that I can edit Harry's face onto unless I can work out a way to get separate images of Harry to interact with each other.
