FIRST PROBLEMS - PORTRAITS
As the religious route is where I failed in the last project, I need to find ways to ensure I don't encounter the same problems again. Locations were my main problem so I will need to find other achievable ways of referencing imagery.
The idea of using a crowd as disciples seems doable as does referencing iconic historical paintings via pose.
As for the freedom of 3-6 images, it seems obvious to form a triptych; whether they be all A3 or use traditional ratios where the middle is double that of the outer images so that they can be folded and closed when the alter is not in use.
How could I suggest an alter inside the images?
Crowd as disciples:
Referencing iconic historical paintings via pose:
The Last Supper
Michelangelo's Pieta
Thomas Gainsborough
Triptych with traditional ratios:
The "Merode Altarpiece", attributed to the workshop of Robert Campin, c. 1427–32
Master of Frankfurt, Sagrada Familia con ángel músico, Santa Catalina de Alejandría, Santa Bárbara, 1510–1520, Museo del Prado, Madrid
Creating a narrative:
Initial concept could include 'disciples' listening, at the table, and finally in some kind of uproar - Judas? Order of images could not relate to the narrative in typical left to right fashion but instead could have the final turn of dramatic events as the main largest image.
Need to form a character first.
Using a triptych is an excellent idea Grace, as is referencing religious painting and the history of art - a tradition followed by many artists such as Cindy Sherman, Rotomi Fani-Kyode, as well as Bill Viola and Joel Peter Witkin the latter two both created interesting work inspired by Gericault's 'Raft of the Medusa'.
ReplyDeleteI suggest the main problem with your methodology last term was leaving the image taking to the last minute. You have already identified the conceptual area in which you wish to work, so start experimenting now. Take photo's using friends this week and just play with ideas. I think this could be very exciting and you are in a very good place so early in development and will allow you plenty of time to gain confidence with you mastery of a DSLR. Take images with your phone which you can use a s note taking and DSLR. No prevarication!
I can't wait to see your first experiments.
