FINALISING IDEAS - PORTRAITS

After a tutorial with Leah Gordon, it was clear I needed to focus the altarpiece on one story in 3 parts rather than 3 stories with one part each. Later, in a tutorial with Anne ideas surfaced around the story of Jesus walking on water.

Christ walking on the sea - Amédée Varint

X on a mountain, X as a ghost walking on water, boat? Lipstick references??

An exhibition in Plymouth about different races experiencing the same coastline brought up some parallels:

Struggling to find a third image for the boat on which the disciples were seated, I thought back to some of the original inspiration - The Moonlandingz have a song aptly titled Vessel but it didn't get me any further. I think I've focused too heavily on copying a Christian story when the main aim was to create a new character like Johnny Rocket.

So who is X?
Cardinal Arugula - I wanted him to have a title and for his name to include some aesthetic correlations so Cardinal achieves both title and colour reference - Arugula is the Americanism for rocket, the herb rather than the transport, so it gives some very obscure reference to the original character this idea sparked from.

What is he doing?
1: Preaching to a following - replicas of himself, completing the task set out, celebrating? Bit vague still.
2: Preaching red lit, two bowing followers either side both similar but not identical could either take two separate photos or one and edit in the changes so the positioning is exactly the same, take 2 nearly identical and flip one.

Framing?
Dependant on what I can do in the timeframe and what is available - Could mount on board, spray paint gold border or cut to fit desired dimensions and hinge together or purchase elaborate frames - having a substantial final outcome is more important than complicating with decorative gold frames.

Text?
I think it would be beneficial to include some inscription to help the narrative a bit.

"AND ON DAY VIII CARDINAL ARUGULA ASKED HIS DISCIPLES
'ANYONE GOT ANY KET?'"

Jan van Eyck, like many others, puts text onto the frame, but it is unlikely I'll produce frames in the time span therefore it will have to go in the image itself - the image(s) will need to be light enough at the bottom to allow the text to be legible over the top of it.

Alternatively, text could be added as a separate frame although I think this will make it look like an after thought and also give it too much presence when it's only meant to be a small detail.

Font appears to be a common theme as does capitals, these are things I will have to adopt.
