It was difficult to work with the traditional ratio format so I decided instead of the side panels being half width, they would be the whole full size and I could cut them down after printing. This would still be difficult as the left panel was very wide but I did not want to make them so small that half the height of the image would be black. The inscriptions also faced problems as I had assumed I would place all text in the middle image or just the outer panels but alas this just would not work. Also during the printing, the images lost some vibrancy. Finally, the actual installation of the work did not go to plan, it became apparent that wood or MDF wasn't going to be achievable as I'm no longer allowed to use the workshop from FE and HE requires an induction which happens in the 2nd year. With the main purpose of this project being to create an altarpiece, this left me quite stuck with just a few hours left and no way of getting the images onto wood or hinge them together.
I really like the idea of a religious figure using using biblical passages mixed with modern day language, and I think the mix of 'pure/clean' passages, with a request for hard drugs is something really eye opening, because it effects your reaction to the prior images, when you get to the last image, and encounter such an unexpected twist in the language. The shallow lighting takes on an entirely different tone after, which makes the first viewing really interesting, because your view of the images actually changes, and that encourages you to go back.

ReplyDeleteLove, love, love the fact you cannot see the space your subject is in, so it creates this empty, deep surrounding that just works so well with the warm light falling onto his body. It's so smooth and flows easily.
ReplyDeleteWOW these are so beautiful they look like paintings. The direction of the light compliments the features beautiful and the tripytch really brings the images together. Also the posing of the model and the way you've directed them brings back ideas of paintings and really brings a authority to the piece. IT'S JUST SO BEAUTIFUL.

ReplyDeletethere's something very powerful about the use of the red in the middle, the lighting in general is very dramatic but the singular red breeds an idea of hunger and power that intrinsically comes with religion. It also kind of touches on Christianity's obsession with naked male bodies in renaissance painting and using that imagery to imply omnipotence and power.
