SOUND DESIGN
Concept:
Initial idea sparked from seeing Liverpool Arts Lab at a festival in Liverpool over the summer where they invited the audience to participate in a very tribal sounding collaboration. There was something very primal about a group of people just making repetitive noise centred around and almost praising the installation of a printer. This got me thinking about more odd objects that have been idolised in a religious context. KT King’s seminal sound creation or as she calls them, ‘ditties’, is a piece called I’m Ian which is somewhat an ode to a praying mantis’ trip to a station toilet. She talks about the piece briefly when I interviewed her. (1:18-1:58)
The lyrics I'm particularly interested in from the piece are:
A pilgrimage from bar to stall
A porcelain halo awaits
How to manifest the concept into sound?
With the religious undertones to the selected passage, a church organ seems appropriate. With the song being loosely based on a dream in which Ian makes a pilgrimage to the toilet at Shoreditch station, sounds of running taps and flushing toilets also seem relevant. The contrast of these elements will naturally draw up connections between attitudes to religion. But how to create narrative out of this I am yet unsure. (Note to self: contact sister to arrange recording of organ).
