A BETTER IDEA: TAKING FRAMES LITERALLY

The initial idea was awful. After a tutorial with Rosie Gunn, the main point of the brief seemed clearer. We are required to use old practices to inform new ones, so, on this, I have decided to look at how time affects materiality. In particular, the ageing of old paintings and the way that varnish darkens and why. As of yet, I am unsure whether this will take a more scientific route as to the changing of the chemicals in varnishes as they react to surroundings, or a conceptual path that looks more into the visual side of paintings ageing, or equally both.

In the first video, I was particularly interested in how partial restoration can completely alter the lighting of the piece. This is prevalent in the clip at 2:36

This video covers the restoring of all aspects of ageing not just the deterioration of the varnish.
