LESS IS MORE, MORE IS LESS, LESS IS LESS BUT MORE'S NOT MORE
"They're not attachments, they're parasites."
- The-omniscient-and-slightly-out-of-context Patsy Stone on material possessions
Although I don't want to pre-plan the resulting objects of the walks, it would make sense to have a broader range of knowledge that could end up influencing the making of the work. Naturally I took to Pinterest (link here) and another online book titled Reductionism in Art and Brain Science by Eric R Kandel. There is also a new draw to poetry influences hence the inclusion of the Ode To Joy flashmob, and the idea of the objects being an Ode To the walks makes them even more poetic themselves.
This book discusses the American Epiphany era of the 1940s and 50s when the art world shifted post world war II.
J.M.W. Turner revisited a painting and recreated it, reducing it to its more basic formal elements. He did this to force the viewer to engage more fully with the work because they now had to use their own memories and experiences to 'fill in the blanks'. In the current climate where connection and engagement is drastically reduced, Reductionism makes more sense than the suggestions of minimalism.

"Scientists use reductionism to solve a complex problem
and artists use it to elicit a new perceptual and
emotional response in the beholder."

“We are closer to attaining cheerful serenity by simplifying thoughts and figures. Simplifying the idea to achieve an expression of joy. That is our only deed.”
-Henri Matisse
this is gonna sound weird but u talking about objects on the walk made me think of physical objects n how when i was a kid i would have a box of things i picked up when playing outside lmao some of them being Big Nails, rocks, fibre glass (which my mum took off me) and a weed grinder that i thought i could use to put leaves n dirt in to make 'salad' (which my mum also took off me lmaoo) but anYway it could be interesting if u found any cool/weird stuff on the way for a sculpture stick it on a painting or smthnnn
ReplyDeleteyess! have been thinking about doing that but struggling to find a lot of references bc beyond 'found materials' it gets a bit difficult to search for. making a salad is actually jokes tho like making 'potions' with a clusterfuck of chemicals from the bathroom, you've raised a v interesting idea there ty v much
